My Predictions for WWDC

image

The kickoff to Apple’s annual Developer Conference is less than 3 hours from now so let me go on record and post my predictions for Tim Cook’s keynote. There’s a lot to cover so let’s dive in.

What Everyone Is Expecting Streaming Radio

No surprise here since Sony leaked word last Friday about being the final major record label to sign onto their secretive music streaming service. The one thing that puts Apple ahead of Spotify, Google Music and Pandora is Apple’s massive listening library for iTunes users. Since Apple has a history of all your music purchases, importeed CDs and listens, I believe they will offer a higher quality matching service for stations where you need to really start at square one with the others. The price point here is everything. Google is offering $7.99/month through June after that it jumps to the same price as Spotify ($10/month). Anything over $10/month for Apple will have to be justified by including additional features.

Just for the record, this does not excite me. Why does everyone feel the need to offer streaming music service at $10/month when everyone is paying $80-$150/month for cable? Stop wasting time on music service and create a model that connects users with cable stations directly. It’s the same thing they did to the music industry 10 years ago. Take out the middle men (Comcast, Direct TV, Dish Network) and save consumers money by creating a relationship directly with the content creator.

iOS 7 and OS X

There has been lots of talk about this update to iOS being completely headed up by Jony Ive the design genius. Look for Jony to tighten the Apple brand by making the appearance and behaviors of all Apple apps more consistant across the board. This is not a huge problem but part of me is excited to hear what Jony has to say and what updates he has in store. The one area here people will be watching for are updates to notifications. They are way to clunky right now and difficult to manage.

New Macbooks

Spec changes are expected here but nothing big like Retina coming to iPad Mini or 4K output for MacBook Pros. Look for this section to lead the keynote as it’s pretty blah.

My Sleeper Picks Updated iTunes

Let’s face it, iTunes has evolved into the kitchen sink for Apple. Everything just gets thrown in there. It started as the Music hub, then they added Podcasts, TV Shows, Movie, Trailers, Apps, Software and 4 other things I’m sure I don’t know about. If there is one product that frustrates people the most, it’s the iTunes. It needs an update and one built around the users. Maybe it needs to become iStore or create a new environment for all the channels (iMusic, iTube, Apps, etc.).

TV Service

We all know Apple is working on a TV solution and I would love for them to tackle my rant from above. In reality, I think there is a 2% chance this will happen later today mainly because it’s been so quiet on this front. But, if they do it will change the game for TV. Again, I’m not looking for a physical TV here. I’m looking for a service that bypasses cable providers and connects me to the studios or the network to get me my content I subscribe to. At my house we watch ESPN, NFL, Food Network, USA and an occasional MTV. Even if I pay $10/month for each of those stations that would still save me $40/month and if there’s one company to take this on it’s Apple.

Reaction

In the days to come I will be posting my reaction to the Keynote. Thanks for checking this one out.

Call Friends for Free With Facebook's Messenger App

Here’s the second thing people were hoping to hear about earlier this week at the Facebook announcment - Facebook Messanger Calls.

image

About the App, users can make calls via Wi-Fi or through their data plan and it works much like a standard web call since its powered by Skype. To place a call, go into the Facebook Messenger app, click on a user, then in the upper right hand corner there is a little “i” icon at the top. When you tap this icon users are given the option to call that user or view their Timeline. Note, only users with the standalone Messenger app can receive calls.

How big of a deal is this to Facebook? Well, they announced it via a Press Release and updating the app in the app store. Translation, not a big deal at all.

Next stop? Video calling. But lets see if this works first.

LA Times Tech: Tumblr more popular than Facebook?

As much as I would like to believe this survey, I don’t. This afternoon the LA Times released a story that Tumblr and is more popular than Facebook for people aged 13-25. Complete image below:

image

Don’t get me wrong, I like Tumblr. Not only is it very entertaining, but its a very easy platform for blogging with their easy posting options for quotes, photos, video, etc.

With all that, I don’t buy for one second that its the #1 site for people aged 13-25. There are only 1,000 people surveyed here so I’m thinking they sat out in the parking lot of a high school 2 blocks away from Tumblr’s headquarters. Popular, yes. But not the absolute top.

Filtering coming to Facebook

image

When I found this article on The Verge today I got really excited. I thought, FINALLY filtering is coming to Facebook News Feed. But, no. It’s only coming to messages and allows you to restrict messages coming from strangers. Bummer.

I hope at the next F8 (Facebook’s version of Apple’s product announcements) they allow filtering on the News Feed. What is this? I’m sure we’ve all been stung by a spoiler alert in your news feed. At least I have. I wish they would allow the option to remove posts that contain certain keywords or phrases.

Take The Voice finale for example. NBC changed the timeslot of the finale to 8pm-10pm and we missed the beginning of the show. We said, oh well, we’ll just view it On Demand when available and avoid the news. Sure enough, 9:58pm my News Feed filled up with the winner. It would have been nice to hide all mentions that contain “The Voice” in Facebook.

Another great example would be around the elections. I’m everyone had at least one friend who you wanted to stick in the corner until voting was over. Maybe some the entire week. How nice would it have been to filter out a topic without having to unfriend them?

I’m sure brand pages and advertisers would disagree with this because people could filter out their messages but I don’t care. This would be a great addition.

CEOs Afraid Of Going Social Are Doing Shareholders A Massive Disservice - Forbes → forbes.com

I am absolutely floored by some of these numbers.  A great article.

“More than half the U.S. population has eagerly embraced sites like Facebook and more than a third are using Twitter, yet only 7.6% of Fortune 500 CEOs have bothered to jump on Facebook, and just 4% have opened Twitter accounts. All in, 70% of big company CEOs have no presence on social networks. ”
